Vaati concept design-cosplay layout/tutorial tips by WalkingMelonsAAA Vaati concept design-cosplay layout/tutorial tips by WalkingMelonsAAA
PLEASE READ!!!!

This is for a contest that one of my friends are holding. To come up with your own design for Vaati. Now I still wanted to keep it as close to his wind mage form as possible but I suppose change things up a bit. Such as the darker colors fit him well, and in my opinion just look more realistic then bright flashy colors in a game or anime. I also wanted to kind of contribute his other forms he has into this. I gave him more eyeballs and small amounts of armor such as on his shoulders like in his rebirth or sorcerer form in Zelda Minish Cap.

So I know I've done a character layout before but didn't nearly go into this much detail, reason being is simply because this is an actuel cosplay design. Meaning is has to be possible. And though I originally went to just say notes I kind of accidentlly made a messy tutorial. feel free to NOT use my notes or suggestions. I do have experience with making plushies and some costumes and stuff so I am very sure that this is possible to make. and again feel free to NOT use my notes, this is just how I simply would go about doing things, and I would probably make some agustments along the way.

Sorry for Spelling, or of you can't read my horrible hand writing. it's so hard to write on a tablet, and no I don't know why I didn't type it out instead. :V if you have any questions on either what I said, or if you want me to re explain something to be more clear feel free to ask me in the comments.

ALSO cosplayer can use this, after all it is on the internet and I can't stop you wither way. lol So it's not just for the contest I'm entering, it is open to everyone. :> I may make this to go to comicon as in a few years or next year or something. :>

I was wonder how the finished cape is supposed to be able to be removed by taking it off over your head, also how are you supposed to attach the crest and I mean like how to keep it in place?

lol ok I'll try to explain it better and not in a cramped tiny picture with bad hand writing and descriptions XD But my pictures do fallow what I am about to say so they will matche the diagram above, so I hope that my description in this reply will help make things clearer for you.

So the finished cape is actually two individual pieces. There's the red smaller under part (which cannot be taken off over your head) And the bigger blue and purple part which has the Crest on it.

The Red inner part  has the neck armor attached to it, it's pretty much a buttoned up turtle neck collar, which can be taken off like a button down shirt. When you cut out th fabric make sure it overlaps  (like how you see in the picture) over your neck so you can sew in internal buttons for it to hold shut. Now because of the armor pieces you cannot pull it off over your head, it wraps around your neck and clicks shut with the internal buttons. When you make the neck armor piece, make sure it doesn't only fit your neck, but that it's two parts, kinda like a cylinder cut in half. It is essential this it is two pieces, and that there is a small gap between both pieces on the collar/fabric, so that when you unbutton the collar you can open up the neck piece and take it off that way. Also having a small gap between the armor pieces on your neck gives you more flexibility to turn your head and look around so it's comfortable. Also the split is in the back so you don't have to worry about anyone seeing it with Vaati's hat and hair covering it.

As for the second part of the Cape, the blue and Purple bit This is the Part that you should be able to take off over your head, When you have your cape fabric, you cut a hole the size of your head so that you can put it on over your head, The Red under part (what I was talking about above) fills in that whole and gives that red outline look around your collarbone and neck area. Similar to the neck pieces, you have 4 armor pads/plates (two on each side obviously) When you put thse on the cape, make sure they aren't sealed  to each other, but have a little bit of space between where you put them on in the fabric for flexibility, so that the top one is more sitting on top of the bottom one. But when these plates and the crest shouldn't get in the way for your head because they don't interfere with the head hole that you cut out for yourself.

So, all said and don't, you should be able to take off the blue and purple (the main cape) off over your head, and then the smaller red part by unbuttoning the internal buttons with your hands and taking it off that way because the split in the neck plates allow you to open it.

As for attaching the armor plates, I would use Fabric Glue, such as liquid Stitch, I've used it for attaching Resin, and even Glass (which doesn't often stick to anything using any kind of glue, liquid stitch was better for attaching glass to fabric than liquid cement was) But for an added measure, being as these parts move around a lot, depending on what material you use, I would make small holes in the ends or perhaps the bottom of the crest, and armor plates, to make them kinda like an oversize button and literally sew it in with duel duty thread, or thicker more sturdy thread. Or if you're going metal, you use clamps to attached the fabric to the plates/crest.

All the instructions I gave were optional, if you feel like there is a better way of making the cape or anything, or you want to alter how you make it, or if you want to alter the entire outfit in general, feel free to do so. I more was just writing instructions based on how I personally would go about making this cosplay, but if it doesn't work for you and you want to make it a different way, go on ahead :> Also, in my experience, every step is a knew learning experience and I personally figure things out as I go, so if there are some errors in these instructions I wouldn't be surprised lol.

There have been others who have made this outfit in their own way and or using my instructions, so I know this outfit is very much possible. I can't wait to see you make one! when it's finish or if you persue to make this cosplay, please show mme! I'd love to see! :D

Very cool design. I've been looking up Vaati designs for my own cosplay and I may pull an element or two from here. I'm really liking the cape design in particular. Think you can tell me how you planned to do the shoulder plates?

thnk you, yeah it's free for you to use so go ahea, :D

For me I would do what I drew above in the steps as you can see. I would make the shoulder plates out of worbla, or crafting foam, or metal whatever you decide to make it out of, and I would take the top one and attach the rounded end of the shoulder plate to the Fabric with sewing (if you use metal I would put holes  in it to keep it in place as well as probably some Liquid stitch (because that glue is great not only for plastic but other things like glass for example which doesn't usually stick to glue) just to go an extra measure to make sure it won't be too floppy or fall off. And then I would take the bottom plate and kinda put it under neath the top armor plate like layering it (like what you see in the picture) But instead of attaching it to the top shoulder plate I would attach the bottom end tot he fabric like I did to the top end. I would do that because then it woudl be stick board straight, but flexible with teh fabric when I would move my arm up and down and stuff.

So that's what I would do. ifk if that made sense or if that was very clear but I know it's possible and someone has even done it. maybe you could ask them? I can send you a link to them if you like?

No, that made total sense, thanks! I actually saw the person who cosplayed this after I commented on this. That turned out pretty well. For some reason I was thinking that they were some kind of fabric, not actual armor plates, but them being armor makes the whole thing a lot simpler.

I will definitely send you a link once I actually get around to making the costume! Again, very cool design, probably my favorite Vaati redesign I've seen.

And I am honoured right now by you saying my cosplays are incredible! Srsly. Thanks. :D
But I have at least two cosplays I'm going to do for sure in the near future, so I'll see if I can do it. It would be about 10 months before I announce working on this cosplay if I do.
But I love this because it explains almost exactly how to make it, unlike all my other costumes where I must plan everything out (which is half the fun, don't get me wrong). But trying something different like this would be neat, too. ^_^ Also it is badass, so many more "dark lord" vibes coming from this outfit than his original.

awww well your welcome then. >< And they really are amazing, truly. :D And yeah I totally understand that. :D
Oh and thank you and yourwelcome. and feel free to NOT use my advice, I mean I have made costumes before and know how to sew and stuff but, I'm not entirelly sure if everything works. But i'm pretty sure it does. But when I come up with instructions in my head on how to do things, sometimes I need to make agustments along the way so just a little heads up. :D Oh and, I would imagine the armor be made with fiber glass BUUTTT yeah there's no instruction on fiberglass because I've never used it before and therefore can't say how to make it. 8T And to attach isn't too hard at all, just make sure you leave little internal loops or someway to sew or attack it to the BLUE part of the cape. annddd oh then of course Resic for the gems and stuff. but yeah

If there's anything you want me to explain better or type out because of my crushed hand writing feel free to ask. :D

Lol thank you so very much XD thank you thank you thank you. :>

I think If I were ever to make a cosplay, iwould want to be Toph, a mini genderbend Meidc from TF2 (cuz i love him and he plays the violin like me, so I can totally play it at a con and be all cool like lol) or be this version of Vaati. And then me and my little mini Vaati plushie (he's actually not that small he's like... I think he's 13.2 inches. Then Ghirahim is 15.3 inches) WOULD RULE THE CON MUAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I think I will use most of your advice, although from staring at this for an hour I've changed some details to make it easier for me to make. For some examples, I was thinking of making the armour entirely separate from the cape, instead making it so the corners of it have little pivots that attach to the chest eye and anther piece on the back which would be obscured behind the hair. This way it would still be flexible for moving my arms and such. Plus attaching large, solid things to fabric is something I really stress about doing, as for some reason it appears to be a weakness for me. It just makes me want to stay away from it. And for the boots, I was thinking of buying short ones, then adding some vinyl to it like in this tutorial:[link] This way I could have a set of black boots that I could customize for any cosplay involving them. The two future cosplays I mentioned previously actually involve black boots, so it would be great not to buy new shoes for each one of them XD

For the armour I'm not sure what materials to use. Like you, I have no experience with fibreglass, so I probably won't use that. I was thinking of using paper mache, smoothed down with sandpaper, but it's not a very durable construction, not to mention the fact that it would fall apart instantly in the rain. I've heard there's this plastic sheeting called Wonderflex, which under moderate heat can be moulded. However, it's a little expensive. And yeah, I have leftover resin from my Ghirahim cosplay for the gems. ^_^

Toph is awesome, the Medic is too. And with the Vaati plushie, you're sure to woo!
sorry I was in a rhyming mood. :P

Well lol it's ok if you don't :D And thank you. :D And whoa didn't even think of that! That's genius! saves money and everything :D I will totally consider that if I ever make cosplays in the future. especially being as Medic and Vaati (or at least my design) both have black boots. :> So thanks for telling me that. :D

Yeah I can see that. :> Hey what ever works right? :D With me, if I do ever make this cosplay outfit, I have a friend named Junior who is like an expert with that stuff. I've heard it's pretty messy but yeah man, I have resorces muahahahaaa!!! <am I still need to get Gems for my Ghirahim plushie. :T And YES i am still working on that. I just haven't been able too cuz I've been so busy. :< that little plushie will come up one day though IT WILL

now that I'm thinking of Cosplay and Ghirahim and crap. (LOOK WHAT YOU DID) I did always think it would be pretty cool to dress up as a little gender bend version of Ghirahim. (never could i ever pull off his real self) be a little Debbie or something lol And recreate the design ccuuzz.... no offense Ghira but I don't really want to dress like a slut. l:V but idk. And being a girl, you can do all sorts of things with his outfit but yeah lol idk XD Then of course I would have a little mini Ghira with me as well, just as I would with being Vaati lolol

hahaha that's awesome. XD nice Rhyming man. XD

I see, cool. And I understand! I've been really busy myself lately. I can't wait to see it. Plushplushplushplushplush...

(Lol it's in my name :P) And that's a good idea. I haven't actually seen any genderbend cosplays of Ghirahim (even though I've seen lotsa girls dress up as him) So it would be neat.

Oh really??? lol cool XD Well if or when you ever do start to make this Vaati out fit, please tell me :D Even if it's in like 2 years. :D

lol Yeah Like I jave to leave in like... 2 hours because I have this Orchestra COncert at the center of the arts. Oh man, I think that's the like... 4th no 5 (I didn't go to one :V) Gig thing I've had to do regarding my string instrument in 2 weeks. (that's a lot) And it's gonna get more because of the Christmas season. But Yeah I've been really busy. Also with Writing, Like I have another major writing assignment due on Friday in my Creative Writing Class AAHHH mrr... Oh well though. :> Now that I'm thinking about my plushie I want to work on him, but I don't think i'll be able too unril next week. I want to do a photo shoot of him how he is now hahaha with no clothes on hahah just for kicks and giggles I suppose. HA I can see Tumblr eat that up like no other lol

Yeah I know right. :V i'm suprised because so many girls ((try)) and dress up like him. Most of them make me cringe. :T but I've seen this one that, I swear to you, Was just freaking incredible, and it was a chick, Idk how she did it but she did it! And besides, Cosplaying is more just to have fun, not to dress up like them right? so haha I need to be more nicer XD But yeah I would think a Gender bend would be cool, especially that I'm short, lolol and he's kinda freakishly tall so I'd be kinda like an opposite in a way lolol but idk, It would be fun to come up with designs. :>
